At the Twin Cities Marathon, which faced its own crises with extreme heat, race director Ed Whetham deemed the decision to cancel the 2023 event "devastating" yet necessary. This prompted a thorough examination of temperature trends, ultimately leading to a decision to permanently reschedule the race to a later date, ensuring improved climatic conditions for runners. Whetham noted that running in cooler conditions, even with the chance of snow, was preferable to hotter temperatures.

Rising Temperatures and Their Impact

The climate crisis is growing more pronounced, with the contiguous United States experiencing its hottest July on record this year and 2024 being marked as the warmest year in history. The World Meteorological Organization anticipates that within the next few years, global average temperatures could rise by over 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels. As a result, marathon conditions across the country are becoming less favorable; a study by Climate Central found that by 2045, optimal racing conditions (around 6-7 degrees Celsius) would become increasingly rare for nearly all U.S. marathons analyzed.

Chris Minson, a professor at the University of Oregon, explains that the ideal temperature for marathon running is around 10 degrees Celsius. As temperatures shift into the mid-teens, runners often find themselves competing for blood circulation between muscle function and cool-down efforts.

Minson further elaborates that roughly 25 percent of the energy expended during a run contributes to forward motion, while the majority is used for managing metabolic heat produced by exertion. "If someone was smart enough to say, 'OK, it's a little hotter today than usual, I'm going to run a 7-minute mile instead of a 6:30 mile,' then they won't get any hotter than normal," Casa remarked, emphasizing the importance of strategy in heat management during races.
