Marnus Labuschagne's misery continued, a mammoth Aussie partnership put Cape Town to sleep, and Cam Green had luck on his side on day two. (Getty Images/Fox Cricket)

Cam Green has fallen on the right side of a line-ball call and "that annoying number three" has collected another unwanted record as the Aussies sent Cape Town to sleep on a dominant second day.

Here are the quick hits from the third Test at Newlands.

Starting their innings at the beginning of day two, the tourists raced out of the blocks in glorious mid-morning sun, just as South Africa's openers had done 24 hours earlier.

But things changed with Simon Harmer's entrance into the attack, with the off spinner promptly removing Travis Head for 41 and exposing the under-pressure Marnus Labuschagne.

The South Africans had been clearly looking forward to welcoming Labuschagne to the middle all morning, with the stump mic having earlier picked up an unknown fielder encouraging his bowler to "get that annoying number three in here".

But the hosts did not get much of an opportunity to enjoy Labuschagne's company, with the Queenslander spending four deliveries trying to work a single before edging to slip to be out for a five-ball duck.

Harmer wheeled away in celebration, joined by a horde of ravenous teammates, as Labuschagne's career crisis continued.

The Queenslander's latest failure was his 48th Test innings without a century, making it the longest run without a ton for a top-four batter in Australia's history.

Cam Green had made his way to 22 when he pushed tentatively to a Gerald Coetzee length ball, with his thick edge flying to a stooping Harmer at second slip.

At first glance, it looked to be a regulation grab, with the off-spinner rising then roaring in celebration, but Green was not going anywhere.

After a brief consultation, the umpires decided to send the decision upstairs, where the footage was combed over frame-by-frame.

It was close, with the two camera angles telling two different stories.

Straight on, it could be argued the ball had kissed turf as it nestled into Harmer's hands, but side on, the ball looked to have been collected cleanly.

It was something of a Rorschach Test for the third umpire, and unfortunately for the hosts, he saw the image that kept Green out in the middle.

Only a matter of moments later, it was Renshaw's turn to survive a very close call, with a line-ball LBW decision going the Aussies' way.

The only remaining member of the trio that was punished for the Sandpapergate scandal in 2018, Steve Smith's 11th hour withdrawal robbed cricket fans of one of the most eagerly anticipated returns in Test history.

But if the Australians thought that meant they wouldn't be reminded of one of their darkest days, some in the Cape Town crowd have ensured they were mistaken.

Video emerged of Nathan Lyon taking his place on the boundary at fine leg on day one, with a cackling spectator leaning forward while holding out a sheet of what looked to be sandpaper.

Another fan, wearing a shirt with Smith's sobbing face emblazoned across it, told the Herald Sun he was disappointed the batter wasn't playing, and that he had been looking forward to some "banter".

With both Renshaw and Green set and with the luck appearing to go their way, South Africa was in need of something special.

Alex Carey and Josh Inglis put together a handy partnership late on day two in Cape Town to put Australia in firm control of the third Test against South Africa.

The world's number one ranked bowler provided a fearsome spell in the shadows of tea, dismissing both batters to swing the momentum once again.

Renshaw stood his ground as he just about middled one through to Ryan Rickelton behind the stumps, but was rightly given out for 74 on review, and Green (65) was caught — this time fairly — by Harmer at second slip.

With neither the ball nor pitch appearing to offer very much, it was a seriously impressive five-over spell, and one that saw the 26-year-old take his 100th Test wicket.

In terms of balls bowled, Jansen's 3,864 deliveries saw him become the fifth-fastest bowler to claim a century of scalps, and the third fastest since the 19th century.

Coming together after that Jansen double strike and with Australia's innings at a crossroads at 4-185, Alex Carey and Josh Inglis were composed and circumspect in building their partnership.

The pair were for the most part untroubled in pushing their stand past 100, playing only the shots that were presented to them and offering up few opportunities to the increasingly desperate South Africans.

Not even the second new ball could interrupt their rhythm, with Jansen and Kagiso Rabada unable to emulate Mitchell Starc's stunning spell from late on day one.

But where Starc had low clouds and fading light, the South African spearheads had a placid pitch and still sparkling evening sun.

And in the dying embers of a taxing, 90-over day, some in the Newlands crowd couldn't help but nod off.

Carey and Inglis pushed Australia into a lead and put some in the Newlands crowd to sleep in the process. (Fox Cricket)

Carey (51*) and Inglis (85*) will resume on day three having batted the entire final session and with Australia one run in front.
