Port operators say they must undertake dredging to maintain navigable depths for vessels. (ABC News)

In short:

The Port of Townsville will begin dredging sediment from shipping channels, and dumping it at sea, within days of mass coral spawning.

It scheduled the dredging and dumping for early November when inshore reef corals are expected to have spawned.

The timing has concerned Magnetic Island residents as sediment can have a negative impact for weeks after spawning.
