A preventable disease that disproportionately affects remote Indigenous populations is on the rise in one Gulf community. (ABC North West Qld: Larissa Waterson)

In short:

A 2023 coronial inquest found three women living in the remote Indigenous community of Doomadgee died with highly preventable rheumatic heart disease (RHD) and were failed by the region’s health system.

New figures from the community’s primary health care provider reveal case numbers have jumped by 86 per cent compared to 2020 levels.

What's next?

Community leaders are urging the North West Hospital and Health Service to revisit how RHD is managed and better address its root causes.
